Abstract
The Mediterranean landscape has changed dramatically since antiquity. When we reimagine the deep forests and lost wilderness, we can perhaps better understand and interpret ancient material culture. This is not least true for the early first millennium BCE and for the cities along the Levantine coast, which enjoyed such closeness to the great Lebanese mountains and deep forests. In this presentation, we will trace the religious and mythological importance of theconiferous forest and its wildlife – in the Phoenician cities and (far) beyond. We will find that one key aspect seems to have been ETERNITY.
